Having excellent product photography for your ecommerce website can mean the difference between shoppers completing the sale or having your product glossed over in favor of one of your competitors. Creating high quality photos is one of the best investments you can make for your ecommerce business. If your budget allows for it, hire a professional photographer. A professional will have all of the equipment and experience to create amazing photos that best represent your products. But if your budget is limited or you just want to practice your photography skills here are some great tips that will help you take pictures just like the pros.

  1. Background is important: When photographing products for your website avoid using a background that detracts from your product. In most cases a white or neutral background works best. A neutral background that is consistent from product to product will also help your website look clean and professional.

  2. Lighting is critical: Use a diffused light source to reduce hard shadows around your products. Try shooting your products against a white backdrop outside during early morning hours or on an overcast day. Also consider a using a light box. Light boxes are an inexpensive way to have consistent lighting from product to product. Be sure to check out our upcoming post for tips on building your own light box.

  3. Use a tripod and timer: Using tripod and a timer ensures the best possible picture. These two pieces will minimize any shaking, as well as allow you to set everything up ahead of time.

  4. Use the right lens: Make sure your camera lens is not only good quality, but has autofocus and image stabilization as well. The lens is the most important piece of equipment you can have.

  5. Good composition: Use the rule of thirds to ensure the product is not only in focus, but positioned correctly in the picture itself. Don’t zoom in so much that you have too little background around your products. It’s much easier to crop what you don’t need then to try to add back what you do need.

  6. Prepare the product: Make sure the product is completely free from defect. Make sure there are no smudges or fingerprints on the product, as well as free from stains or wrinkles.

  7. Take multiple shots: Take pictures from many different angles. Online shoppers can’t touch or hold your products so the photos on your website should show every part of the product. Try not to leave anything to the imagination.

  8. Show scale: It is sometimes necessary to include another common item in the photograph so the viewer can get an accurate portrayal of the size. Be sure to use an object everyone will recognize, and in no way markets competition.

  9. Focus: Zoom in on every aspect of the photograph and make sure it is in focus. It is impossible to fix an image that is out of focus–if the camera will not focus, odds are there is not enough light.

  10. Editing the photos: After the shoot use applications like Photoshop, Elements, or LightRoom to crop, correct and resize your images. These editing programs are packed with auto correct that tools that can help fix exposure, white balance, and colors problems that occurred during the photo shoot.
